The six-month NFTS course Finding Your Voice was run online and in person by screenwriter Paul Fraser, and hosted at BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff for the Saturday in-person workshops.
Finding Your Voice is a screenwriting course that takes participants through the entire scriptwriting process: from creating treatments and pitches, to writing and editing scripts, as well as working with fellow students to critique and collaborate on ideas.
My previous experience was in fiction writing, and screenwriting seemed to be an even bigger ask in terms of breaking into the industry, but Finding Your Voice is designed to help with that process: to not just gain experience in writing scripts, but to work in the same way that the TV and film industry works, and hopefully, to come out of the other side of the course with professional-quality sample scripts to use as a calling card to help get noticed in the film and TV industry.
The course was a fantastic experience that has helped me grow immensely as a writer. I have come out of the course with a short film script, a TV pilot episode script and series bible, and having gained experience in pitching ideas to directors and agents, as well as experience of the kind of collaborative working in a writers’ room environment.
I can’t thank Ymddiried: Media Grants Cymru enough for their contribution to the course fees, which enabled me to attend the course.
