Fiorella Roberts: Barbering Course

Grant awarded to: Fiorella Roberts

Ymddiried’s Contribution: £1,000

I was fortunate to receive a £1,000 grant from Ymddiried Media Grants Cymru, which I used to fund my place on a textured hair course with an introduction to barbering with BAFTA-winning artist Tiffany Pierre, and I can wholeheartedly say that it was an investment well spent. As a woman from an Indigenous Mexican background, inclusivity sits at the heart of how I approach my work. Learning about how to work with and care for textured hair wasn’t part of the curriculum when I trained as a makeup artist, and being able to serve clients from all walks of life, regardless of their hair type, texture, or background, is something I feel very strongly about. I can honestly say this course has taken me a significant step closer to that goal.

The course content was well structured and thoughtfully put together. It covered the key foundations of textured hair, including learning how to identify curl patterns, the unique properties of Afro hair, and the specific techniques required to work with it effectively and safely.

Tiffany’s course also explored the cultural importance of hair through the ages, which added a meaningful dimension to the learning experience, deepening my appreciation for the significance of the work beyond just the technical skills. In terms of practical skills, the course delivered real, tangible takeaways.

As a hair and makeup trainee working in film and television, this course also carries real career significance for me. The industry works with a hugely diverse range of talent, and being able to confidently handle all hair types is essential for anyone looking to progress on set.
