Foot in the Door

Ffilm Cymru Wales believe that a strong and sustainable Welsh film industry needs to be open to everyone, no matter a person’s background, financial means or experience.

We work with partners, including Housing Associations, Welsh Broadcasting Trust, local authorities and job centres, to connect people who might not otherwise think a career in film was for them to networks, information and work opportunities so they can get their Foot in the Door.

We find and create local opportunities to learn about and transfer valuable skills such as such as carpentry, hair and make-up, and costume on the set of film and television productions in Wales. We also offer bursary support for things like transport and childcare, making Foot in the Door an opportunity that can work for everyone whatever their circumstances. Most importantly, Foot in the Door offers confidence and practical insights that are an essential first step in the journey to work.

The Ymddiried Bursary programme was set up in 2018-19 with the aim of delivering 120 bursaries across a 3-year period 2019-2021 to support individuals to develop and progress into the screen sector in Wales. This bursary programme was progressive and innovative in terms of supporting individuals into the industry who had less opportunity to sustain a career in the sector.

The total budget allocation was £45,000 over 3 years. Due to the impact Covid had on training and opportunities, there was some underspend.

For many of our trainees, bursaries involved support with Creative Industry placements and opportunities including productions Un Bore Mercher and Dream Horse (33 Trainees). It has also helped towards funding support costs for follow on placements, including within documentary company Truth Department, The Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, The Tuckers (BBC series), Wild Creations, Brave New World (Dragon Studios).

Funding has also supported, Travel (Mileage and Public Transport), Accommodation, Shoes and Clothing for placements, driving lessons and specialist kit and equipment as well as training courses to support individuals with gaining further skills and development within their chosen field.

This film will give you an insight into what we do and how our trainees benefited from working on Dream Horse:
